Volunteering reduces your stress levels

According to Herbert Benson, a cardiologist at Harvard University renowned for his work on relaxation response and the body’s ability to go into a deep relaxation state, the health benefits that come from giving back to others are like those of developing a yoga, spiritual or meditation practice—slowing down cardiac rhythm and lowering blood pressure.

The euphoria experienced by volunteers can be explained by the feeling of calm that comes form helping others. These altruistic objectives strengthen the sense of having a goal in life, which in turn improves self-esteem. Self-esteem provides individuals with the motivation they need to make better life choices.
